Build responsibly
As was in 2018, sustainability will remain the buzzword in 2019, too. From the use of sustainable concrete to use of natural fabrics like jute, sustainability will be a part of the smallest of addition to your home.
“To create affordable structures, conventional ingredients such as concrete will be mixed with suitable waste and recycled materials. We would see heavy usage of traditional materials such as clay, stone, bricks, bamboo. These will be given new treatments and finishes to use them stylishly, providing a new perspective for using these conventional materials,” says Elysium Abodes LLP Founder Hemil Parikh.
These materials are already in demand.
“Furniture, furnishing and decorative made using sustainable materials such as jute, rice paper, etc., are becoming popular among environment-conscious consumers,” says Studio Creo Founder & Creative Director Parushni Aggarwal.
Use technology for safety
Technology has been fast evolving when it comes to home safety and reaching to consumers. According to a survey conducted by Godrej Locking Solutions and Systems, 83 per cent of the consumers interviewed had heard about digital/electronic technology for home safety while 90 per cent of the consumers felt that digital locks are more secure.
“With the rising concerns in terms of personal safety in both residential and commercial buildings, consumers are now looking towards upgrading their home safety using digital locks. There has been a seen significant adoption of electronic locks with safety measures, including 360 fingerprint registration, RFID card, auto locking and adjustable spy code,” says Godrej Locking Solutions and Systems Executive Vice-President and Business Head Shyam Motwani.
“Home automation along with app-based security solution is becoming a massive trend in security space due to its integration ability and the convenience that it brings to the users. With the coming of smart homes, consumers today are looking for features such as direct video streaming to smartphones, two-way communication, lock/unlock option directly from the app, etc.,” says Godrej Security Solutions Vice-President and Global Head- Marketing, Sales and Innovation, Mehernosh Pithawalla.
Design boldly
Minimalism has been ruling the interior décor scene for a few years now. However, in 2019, experts believe the homeowners will be looking at maximalism, bold colours and accent pieces. While not going overboard, homeowners would want their homes to have bold elements.
Parikh defines this trend as the one that is all about saying yes and bringing home the decorative that a homeowner’s heart adores irrespective of them matching with the home interiors or not.
“Those with a liking for experimental hues, vibrant patterns, and startling textures are gradually moving towards embracing the maximalist trend,” he adds
“The most trending theme would be combining bright bold prints with lighter colour in furniture. Many homeowners would be looking for intricate fabrics, concrete finishes, metallic accents and statement furniture pieces to give their home a bold look,” says AMA Design Solutions CEO Mithun S Sheth.
Velvet will be the obvious choice of fabric, suggest experts. This bold and luxurious fabric can be used across areas of the interiors of your home. Available in vibrant colours, velvet always strikes a style statement.
“It looks amazing in bright colours whether you want to accentuate a dining chair, couch or a simple ottoman. Velvet has a naturally lavish and cozy feel, making it the perfect choice for your interiors since it offers both style and comfort in equal measures,” explains Parikh.
For finishes, experts suggest, Ikat would be the right choice to achieve maximalism. Originated in Indonesia, this print can be used by fusing various colours, allowing you to create a bold focal point in your home. The trick, Parikh says, is in knowing how to include this versatile print into your abode.
“It can be used to punctuate a focal colour in the living room couch, or to add a spot of graphic texture to your bedding. Being a noticeable print, it particularly works well with neutral solids and can also blend with other prints,” Parikh says.
This earthen print, according to Sheth, is for those who desire to go back to basics.
